Chrome Plating Amendments

CARB is developing amendments to the Hexavalent Chromium Airborne Toxic Control Measure for Chrome Plating and Chromic Acid Anodizing Operations. Hexavalent chromium plating is the electrical application of a coating of chrome onto a surface for decoration, corrosion protection, and durability. An electrical charge is applied to a tank containing a hexavalent chromium solution. The electrical charge causes the chrome metal particles in the tank to fall out of solution and deposit onto objects placed in the plating solution. Exposure to hexavalent chrome over time may cause various health effects, such as lung cancer or allergic reactions including dermatitis and asthma.

The Chrome Plating amendments are anticipated to be presented to the Board in January 2023.

Health Risk Assessment Sessions

CARB hosted a capacity building session in December 2021, to better equip attendees to understand the uses of Health Risk Assessments (HRA) and significance of information they provide in decision making at various levels of government. A follow-up session was hosted in March to continue an introduction to HRAs. In response to attendees’ comments and questions during the sessions, CARB held a third session to discuss potential methodology changes. We appreciate your comments and feedback, and we are working on potential solutions to issues brought up. We look forward to continuing our discussions on this topic.
