Under the administrative direction of the Director, the C.E.A. A, Assistant Director for Environmental Justice and Equity is responsible for leading, developing and coordinating the Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Environmental Justice (EJ) and Tribal Affairs programs and activities, including meaningful community engagement. The programs facilitate and support meaningful community engagement, promote environmental justice and equity considerations in decision-making throughout the Department, and support government-to-government consultation with tribes. The Assistant Director works closely with DPR’s Director and executive staff to identify, program goals and objectives, as well as targeted initiatives, to promote engagement with and responsiveness to the needs of impacted communities and tribes, and promote protection for all California residents from pesticides. Since January 2021, students and faculty from several universities have been collaborating in the fight for clean air. The North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation ( CEC ) is launching a first-of-its-kind US$2 million grant program, EJ4Climate, to support environmental justice and climate resilience for underserved, vulnerable communities, and Indigenous communities across North America. Initiated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the CEC established this new grant program to support underserved and overburdened communities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States as they prepare for climate-related impacts. This program will provide funding directly to Indigenous communities and community-based organizations to deliver environmental justice and advance local solutions to adapt to climate change. “Climate change touches every aspect of our lives and it acts as a threat multiplier for our most vulnerable communities,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Stockton residents live with a significant air pollution burden and one of the highest childhood asthma rates in the state. Since January 2021, community organizations in Stockton and students and faculty from several universities have been collaborating in the fight for clean air. With input from community leaders, the student teams highlighted here have analyzed air permits, identified and mapped top emitters, pollutants, and changes in emissions, studied and mapped health impacts, and compiled resources on how residents can protect themselves and their families (see examples at the bottom of this post).
