Our 2020 Summer Climate Justice Leadership Academy kicks off in just one week! Eighteen Oakland high school students will be tuning into our 6-week intensive environmental justice virtual training program. The Academy will take students on a deep-dive into local environmental justice issues, while building their leadership, advocacy, and organizing skills along the way.
Students in our Summer Academy will be learning about and working to address food justice. Many low-income communities are in "food deserts," where residents face food insecurity and barriers to accessing healthy, fresh, affordable foods. This lack of access has implications on people's health and well being, which is even further impacted by industrial pollution, the climate crisis, and the ongoing pandemic.
Throughout the program's Food Justice week, our youth leaders will be learning about and discussing everything from the basics of food justice and its local impacts, to the connection between food and climate chaos, agribusiness and the food production industry, urban farming, farmworkers and discrimination, and so much more!
Support our students as they work toward greater food security and food justice for their comunities!
With your support, the Summer Academy will take our food justice commitment a step further. We know our students are from communities facing food insecurity. And we know they can better participate in the program if they are well-fed and therefore better able to learn and focus.
That's why we are so excited to announce that we are partnering with former Rose Foundation Grassroots Fund grantee Growing Together to provide each of the students and their families with weekly boxes of fresh, locally-grown produce! Growing Together is also sending all the students home garden kits specifically created for their living situations, whether they only have room for planting on a windowsill or a backyard to grow a garden in. Throughout the program, the students will be guided through the process as they grow their produce, taking our educational training into action!
And the students will share videos with each other cooking up delicious, wholesome meals with all that fresh produce! Just another creative way our first-ever virtual 2020 Summer Academy is embracing virtual and remote programming for an engaging and fun summer!
But we can't do it all without you!

Our New Voices youth are as committed as ever to building community power, because they know that environmental injustices are not taking a break in this global health crisis. They know that the pandemic shines yet another light on the health and economic inequalities in our communities, including food injustice. So they have doubled-down on their work towards cleaner air, greater food security, and a more informed and engaged community.
