CARB Releases Interactive "StoryMap" of Emissions on AB 617 Communities

CARB Releases Interactive “StoryMap” of Emissions in AB 617 Communities

This figure displays the Community Emission Inventory Resource Webpage

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) would like to introduce the Community Emission Inventory Resource Hub, which includes a “StoryMap” of air pollutant emissions in Assembly Bill (AB) 617 communities. The Community Emission Inventory StoryMaps is a mapping tool that displays community-level emission inventory data for select AB 617 communities through a clear, engaging, and transparent data sharing process that is interactive and downloadable.

The mapping tool displays criteria pollutant and toxics emission data, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), reactive organic gases (ROG), particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller (PM2.5), and diesel particulate matter (DPM), in a manner that facilitates communication between communities, air districts, and CARB as we all collaborate in a meaningful partnership to review the emissions data used to inform development of Community Emissions Reduction Programs (CERP). The baseline emissions data presented in the tool can be used to validate existing concerns, identify new challenges, prioritize emissions reduction strategies, set emissions reduction targets, and track progress.

This figure shows an example of mapping visualization within CARB’s Community Emission Inventory StoryMaps platform. It displays the 2020 NOx emissions from on-road vehicles (such as cars and trucks) and locations of sensitive receptors (e.g., schools, healthcare facilities) in the International Border Community in San Diego.

The tool has an easy-to-use feature that encourages users to provide feedback to help identify areas of air pollution concern and improve existing community-level emission inventories. First-time users can visit the "FAQ and Tutorials," tab on main webpage for assistance in navigating the tool and understanding the data. Users can also watch short videos that describe the tool and its key capabilities. Currently, the mapping tool presents emissions data for the South Los Angeles (South Coast), International Border Community (San Diego), and Arvin/Lamont (San Joaquin Valley) communities. CARB staff will continue to work with air district teams and communities to develop similar StoryMaps for all AB 617 communities in the near future.

We are hopeful that the tool will provide complex technical data in a format that is usable to our community partners and empower everyone with data and information to more effectively participate and drive decision-making in the AB 617 process.

We are continually seeking feedback to improve the tool, so please let us know your questions, comments, and inputs. Contact the Area Source Improvement and Community Inventory Development Section in the Air Quality Planning and Science Division at community.inventory@arb.ca.gov.
