A Practical Guide to Buying an Air Purifier on a Budget

November 30, 2023

Cooler winter temperatures mean that air pollution can last for quite a long time in San Joaquin Valley. In the last week there have already been several days where the air quality is in the “unhealthy” range.

Maybe you want to give the gift of clean air this holiday season, but you don’t know where to start? There are so many models to choose from and so many sites recommending different brands - how do you know which one to trust?

Here’s a website with practical recommendations on how to clean your air, put together by students at UC Berkeley in collaboration with the Environmental Justice Program at Catholic Charities, Diocese of Stockton:

  • If you have a central HVAC system in your house, consider upgrading your air filter. Click here to find out more about air filters.

  • If not, consider an air purifier. Click here to find out more about air purifiers.

These recommended air purifiers were selected based on: lowest overall cost, best performance, and ease-of-use. (We are not affiliated in any way with any of the products or vendors described on the website.)

You can find the full website by going to https://ejstockton.org/ and clicking on “Your local air” in the top menu, or go directly to the air filter website. You can also check the current air quality and sign up for air quality alerts.

Please email ej@ccstockton.org if you have questions or suggestions.
