Assembly Bill 1757 Targets: Expanding Nature-Based Solutions to Achieve California's Climate Change Goals
Today, the Administration released targets that harness the power of nature to help California achieve its climate goals. These targets were called for by the Governor’s 2022 California Climate Commitment and establish quantitative goals for the most effective nature-based solutions that increase land health and resilience - and thus support durable and sustainable carbon stocks. The targets and supporting materials are on the California Natural Resources Agency's (CNRA) website here: Expanding Nature-Based Solutions (ca.gov).
Nature-based solutions (NBS) that deliver on California’s climate change goals are land management practices that increase the health and resilience of natural systems, which supports their ability to serve as a durable carbon sink. Unhealthy lands are more vulnerable to future climate change impacts, and less able to durably store carbon. Lands stressed by climate change also threaten public health and safety, food and water security, economic prosperity, and biodiversity.
The NBS climate targets reflect years of climate work on the land sector, including
California’s Scoping Plan, Climate Smart Lands Strategy, and Climate Adaptation
Strategy, as well as reports and studies by state agencies and academics.
The targets were informed by the Assembly Bill 1757 Expert Advisory Committee, early
tribal consultation and an inter-tribal workshop, and public input.
